Which hair colouring technique suits you
Balayage and highlights both lighten sections of hair, but the technique and end result are quite different. Balayage is hand-painted for a soft, sun-kissed gradient, while highlights use foils for a more uniform, defined pattern of lighter strands.
What lightening hair actually does to the cortex
Hair's natural colour comes from melanin pigment stored inside the cortex, the structural middle layer of each strand. A lightener (bleach) works by first opening the outer cuticle slightly so it can reach the cortex, then breaking down the melanin pigment inside it — the more processing, the more the natural colour lifts. This is why any lightening technique, done carelessly or too often, can weaken the cortex's protein structure over time; a skilled colourist manages timing and product strength specifically to lighten pigment without over-processing the strand's internal bonds.
Why balayage and highlights look so different for the same underlying process
The chemistry is similar; the application is what creates the different results. Balayage is hand-painted freehand directly onto the hair's surface, usually heavier toward the ends and lighter near the root, which naturally creates a soft gradient with no hard line — that's also why it grows out gently, since there was never a sharp boundary to begin with. Highlights are woven through foils, which isolate each section completely during processing for a more uniform, consistently placed result from root to tip. Neither is "better" — balayage suits a low-maintenance, natural gradient, while foiled highlights suit a bolder, more graphic, evenly placed change.
