Facial and body bleaching works by lightening the fine hair and outer skin layer, giving a smoother, more even-toned appearance. Unlike a de-tan, which removes dead tanned skin, bleaching specifically targets tone evenness — many clients use both treatments together for the best result.

Bleaching vs de-tan — different mechanisms, often confused

These two treatments are frequently mixed up because both leave skin looking brighter, but they work in genuinely different ways. De-tan is exfoliation — it physically removes the outermost, pigmented dead skin cells to reveal what's underneath. Bleaching is chemical — a mild oxidising cream lightens the visible pigment in place, both in the skin's surface cells and in the fine, often-invisible hair (vellus hair) covering the face and body. It doesn't remove any skin; it changes how the pigment already there looks.

Why the two are often paired

Because they act through different mechanisms, exfoliating (de-tan) first and bleaching afterward tends to give a more complete, even result than either alone — de-tan clears away the most heavily pigmented dead surface layer, and bleaching then evens out the tone and lightens fine facial hair for a smoother overall look. Bleach is a mild chemical treatment, so it's normally done gradually with repeated sessions rather than aiming for a dramatic change in one visit, and a patch test is standard practice for anyone with sensitive skin.
