What a tan actually is, at the skin level

Tanning happens in the epidermis, the skin's outer layer. Cells called melanocytes produce a pigment called melanin as a protective response to UV exposure — the more sun or pollution-related irritation the skin encounters, the more melanin those cells produce, and the darker the visible tan appears. This tanned, pigmented layer sits in the outermost part of the epidermis (the stratum corneum), made up mostly of dead skin cells that are due to be shed anyway as part of skin's natural renewal cycle, which normally takes several weeks.

How de-tan treatments speed that process up

A de-tan treatment doesn't stop melanocytes from producing pigment — instead, it manually exfoliates the tanned, dead surface cells away faster than the skin would shed them on its own, revealing the less-pigmented skin underneath immediately. Raga and O3+ de-tan differ mainly in formula strength and depth of exfoliation: Raga is a gentler, more frequent-use option, while O3+ is formulated for a deeper result on more stubborn tan.
