What's the real difference
Gel and acrylic are the two most common nail extension methods, and both give you longer, stronger nails — but they differ in look, feel, and how they're applied. Picking the right one comes down to how natural you want your nails to look and feel.
How each one actually bonds to your natural nail
Both extensions build a durable layer over the natural nail plate, but the chemistry differs. Gel extensions use a gel product that's cured hard under UV or LED light in stages, which is why gel sets in a flexible but firm finish that moves slightly with the natural nail underneath — this flexibility is also why it tends to feel and look more natural, and why it's generally gentler on the nail plate during both application and removal. Acrylic extensions are built from a liquid monomer mixed with a powder polymer, which the nail technician shapes while it's still workable; it hardens through a chemical reaction as it dries in air, without needing UV light, resulting in a noticeably harder, more rigid surface.
Why that difference matters for durability and nail art
Acrylic's rigidity makes it more resistant to everyday knocks and better suited to intricate, raised 3D nail art that needs a sturdy base to hold its shape. Gel's flexibility makes it more comfortable for daily wear and less likely to lift at the edges on nails that flex a lot, but it can be more prone to chipping under heavy impact than acrylic. Both last several weeks with proper fills as the natural nail grows out, and in both cases, removal should always be done at the salon with the right process — peeling either off at home risks taking layers of the natural nail plate with it.
