The nail plate, the matrix, and the cuticle (a different cuticle to hair)
Nails grow from an area at the base called the nail matrix, hidden just under the skin — this is the only part of the nail that's actually alive and producing new growth; everything visible on the nail plate itself is made of dead, hardened cells (keratin, the same protein hair is made from, just packed differently). The cuticle at a nail's base is a thin layer of skin, not part of the nail itself — its job is to seal the edge of the nail plate against the skin and protect the matrix underneath from bacteria and irritation. This is a completely different structure from the hair cuticle discussed in our hair guides, despite sharing the name.
What a manicure or pedicure is doing beyond polish
Cutting and filing shapes the dead nail plate safely, without going near the living matrix. Cuticle care gently pushes back and tidies the protective skin fold rather than removing it entirely, since cutting too much of it away removes a genuine barrier against infection. Exfoliation and moisturising address the surrounding skin — particularly on feet, where thicker, drier skin and closed shoes create more friction and callus build-up than hands typically see. Regular sessions catch small issues (early ingrown edges, cracked heels, rough cuticles) before they become painful, which is the practical health case for a manicure or pedicure beyond how the polish looks.
