Hair Smoothening vs Straightening
Two different treatments, often confused for one
Smoothening and straightening are often used interchangeably, but they work differently. Smoothening relaxes frizz while keeping some natural movement in your hair, while straightening chemically breaks and reshapes the hair bond for a permanently pin-straight finish. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right one for your hair goals.
Two different targets: the cuticle vs the cortex
The key difference between these treatments comes down to which layer of the hair they act on. Smoothening treatments mainly work on the cuticle — the outer, scale-like layer — coating and sealing it so it lies flat. A flat cuticle reflects light evenly (shine) and resists letting in the humidity that makes hair swell and frizz. Because the cortex, the hair's structural inner layer, is left largely untouched, some natural wave and volume remains, and the effect fades gradually as new hair grows in and the coating wears off through washing.
Why straightening is a bigger, more permanent change
Chemical straightening works one layer deeper. The cortex is held in its natural shape by internal chemical bonds (disulfide bonds) between keratin protein chains — these bonds are what give curly or wavy hair its curl pattern in the first place. A straightening treatment uses a chemical relaxant to break these bonds, then reshapes the hair straight while it's held in that position, before a neutralising step re-forms the bonds in the new, straight configuration. Because this changes the cortex's actual structure rather than just coating the surface, the result is far more permanent — it grows out with a visible transition line at the roots rather than fading evenly, and it's a bigger commitment that's best discussed with a stylist first.
