Keratin is the natural protein your hair is already made of. A keratin treatment replenishes lost keratin and seals the hair cuticle, which is why hair feels noticeably smoother and looks shinier right after the service — and stays easier to manage for months afterward.
Cuticle and cortex — the two layers that decide how your hair behaves
Every strand of hair has three layers, but two of them explain almost everything about frizz and shine. The cuticle is the outermost layer — thin, overlapping scales, a bit like roof tiles, that lie flat over the strand. When the cuticle lies flat, light reflects off it evenly and hair looks glossy; when it's raised or damaged (from heat, chemical colour, sun, or just rough handling), those scales catch on each other and on humidity in the air, which is what actually causes frizz and tangling. Underneath the cuticle is the cortex — the thick middle layer that makes up most of the hair's mass. It's built from keratin protein strands held together by chemical bonds, and it's the cortex that determines your hair's strength, elasticity, and natural curl pattern. A third, innermost layer called the medulla exists in some hair types but plays a minor role.
How the treatment works on these layers
A keratin treatment applies a keratin-rich formula to the hair, then uses heat (usually a flat iron) to help it bond to the cuticle and fill in the gaps left by damage. This smooths the raised cuticle scales back down, so they lie flat again — which is the direct cause of the shine and reduced frizz you feel immediately after. It also acts as a temporary barrier that keeps humidity from swelling the cortex unevenly, which is what usually triggers frizz on humid days. Because this coats and smooths rather than permanently altering the cortex's internal bonds, the effect fades gradually as hair grows and gets washed — typically over three to five months — rather than growing out with a visible line like a colour treatment would.
